     If you've answered yes to any or all of the above questions you've probably fallen into the trap that almost every Windsor Ontario live music maker, rapper and band has in the last ten years.

   THE D.I.Y. TRAP!

   D.I.Y. stands for "Do It Yourself".

   The motto that all music magazines and music stores sell you on. The motto that gets you to believe all you need is a couple of hundred bucks, a guitar, two turntables and a microphone and a Saturday afternoon and you will create a musical masterpiece that will make you a rich obnoxious rockstar! 

    For those of you who haven't experienced this "do it yourself" nightmare, here's the scenario.

    "Joe guitar player" has a band. He writes some songs and gets his buddies to play along. They start doing shows and people dig their sound. Joe and the band decide they need CD "product". So they phone local studios and discover the cost to record their "debut" will be somewhat more than a weekend of beer binging. So they decide (over another weekend of beer) to rent some recording equipment and record a "band practice".  After two hours of getting the equipment, about four hours of everyone arguing about how to set up their makeshift home recording studio and realizing the singer is very hungover, they start trying to record something.

     As they listen to the first playback, they realize the drums sound like paint cans, the bass is one big rumble, the guitar has about as much balls as my cat (he's nuetured) and the singer sounds like he's still alseep. Not to be detered, they continue tweaking well into the night, trying this mic and that, recording and re-recording until about 17 hours later, they realize they have two decent song performances recorded.

     Too bad they wanted to record eight songs! And worst of all, the audio recording still sounds like a crappy AM transistor radio!

    So Joe spends another 15-20 hours trying to "fix it in the mix". Then the final blow comes. (more on that later) 

       Lets add this up, shall we?

• Recording equipment - (digital recorder, 6 mics, cables, etc.) - $250
• Time invested at $10 per hr (4 guys x $10 per hr. x 17 hrs) - $680
• Joe trying to fix the problems (1 guy x $10 per hr x 20 hrs) - $200
• Case of beer to come up with this "great" idea - $30

(ps. There's only 24 hours in a day. If you DON'T think your time is worth at least $10 per hour, you need to re-evalute your life priorities) 

TOTAL RECORDING EXPENSE - $1160 (for 2 crappy sounding songs)

     Then the final blow comes. Since Joe and the band have put in so much work into their digital recording, they post it to their MySpace site.

     Guess what happens?

     Eventually people check out Joe's 2 song D.I.Y. recording.

     Whats their impression?

• Crappy sounding songs, crappy band.
• Will anyone buy it? .... Maybe Joe's Mom but that will be it.
• Will bars book them for shows?...Probably not. If the band doesn't sound professional, the band probably isn't professional.
• Will people come to their shows after listening to it?  I doubt it. Would you go see a band that sounds like they suck? 

     So whats Joe's end result?

     After all that hard work, Joe's band has a 2 song demo they are embarassed about, the band is out $1160 in rentals, time and effort and they either have to start over or break up!
